Ratatouille – Sound Redesign

Role: Sound designer/ sound editor/ Mix & master
In this personal sound redesign, I reworked an entire sequence from Pixar’s Ratatouille, starting from the moment Remy and Linguini lock themselves in the bathroom and ending with a frittata flying out the window. The original dialogue was preserved, but all sound effects, ambient elements, and transitions were rebuilt from scratch.
Into the Sound
The process began with isolating the original dialogue to allow full control over the rest of the sonic environment.
From the opening scene in the bathroom — where Linguini collapses to the floor — every sound was designed and placed with frame-level precision:
• The dull thud of his body hitting the tiles
• Subtle fabric friction, limb movements, hair brushing, and the soft echo of the tiled room
• Remy’s quick steps and nervous gestures, recreated through layered animalistic foley and high-frequency accents
As the scene progresses into the apartment:
• Each action was supported by custom sound effects: pacing across wooden floors, swishing clothes, shifting weight, and precise character gestures.
• The moment Remy begins pulling Linguini’s hair was treated with tight rhythmic editing to mirror the physical choreography — hair tension, clothing pulls, head snaps, and quick reactive footsteps were built to convey both comedic timing and control.
In the final part of the sequence:
• As Linguini attempts to flip the omelette, I designed the sizzle of the pan, the sticky texture of eggs, the sound of the spatula scraping, and the exaggerated whoosh of the frittata mid-air.
• The shattering window was constructed from multiple glass layers to achieve both clarity and impact, with a carefully placed burst of outdoor ambiance to mark the moment of chaos.
I added a soft glokenspiel harmony and a violin tremolo as an introduction to the original score, creating a musical lead-in that blends seamlessly, with the animation's tone.
All sound editing, mixing, and mastering were done by me.
